Artist Yvonne Buijs-Mancuso, of Friday Harbor, WA has been accepted into the 2012 CVG Show, a state-wide juried art show held at the Collective Visions Gallery in Bremerton, WA. Her Encaustic Painting titled “Monet in Situ” is one of 136 artworks chosen from over 800 works submitted by artists throughout Washington State by exhibition juror Kathleen Moles Curator of Exhibitions and Collections at the Museum of Northwest Art in LaConner, WA. Accepted artists will be competing for $6,000+ in cash prizes plus potential purchase awards and will be on display at CVG between January 28 and February 25.

The Collective Visions Gallery is located at 331 Pacific Avenue in downtown Bremerton and will be open 10 to 5 Tuesdays through Saturdays and 1 to 5 on Sundays during the exhibition. The public will have the opportunity to vote on a $300 People’s Choice award up to 5 pm, February 24. A public reception will be held during Bremerton’s First Friday Gallery Walk, February 3 from 5 to 9 pm.

Diptych: An Exhibition in Two Parts

Part One: "Encaustic and Silk"
Albuquerque artists Evey Jones and Harriette Tsosie explore the media of encaustic (pigmented wax) and silk in two exhibitions slated for the Harwood Art Center January and February 2012.
The first exhibition, Encaustic and Silk, opens Friday, January 6th, with a reception from 6:00 - 8:00 PM.

Jones' work features ink on silk and focuses on themes of change and loss, inspired by the recent death of her mother. The work intimates a larger exhibition scheduled at the art center for April 2013. The attached image is from a series called "The Heart of the House is Gone," and was produced in response to the artist witnessing her mother's aging and eventual death. The winged figures reference that unmarked moment of "crossing over." "Crossing over is what I believe in," says Jones.

Tsosie's work is encaustic on panel. The pieces are predominantly mandalas, which represent wholeness, and some are based on the I-Ching, an ancient Chinese book of divination. Central themes of the I Ching are the balance of opposites and the inevitability of change. "I'm interested in the role of chance in our lives," says Tsosie.

The first exhibition continues through January 26th.

The second exhibition, "Paper and Wax," opens Friday, February 3rd with a reception from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. In this half of the diptych, the artists continue exploring the versatility of their media with a new group of paintings.

The Harwood Art Center is the community outreach program of Escuela del Sol, an independent, non-profit Montessori school founded in 1968.

The Juried Exhibition opening was very impressive to view and there was a wonderful turn out of patrons and artists. We were impressed with the juried artists that made the trip to be part of the show from Illinois, California, Colorado, and Arizona. Thanks to all of you who were able to attend, your presence definitely helped make this show a success.

Linda Durham, the juror took 2 hours to carefully pick Best of Show and Award of Excellence. She said it was very difficult to choose the winners from such a wide range of talent.

National Exhibition Opens at EAI

NATIONAL EXHIBITION OPENS AT EAIThe Encaustic Art Institute (Institute) opens its first national juried exhibition Saturday, October 8th, with a reception in its Pyramid Gallery from 1:00 - 6:00 PM.

Juror for the exhibition was noted gallery owner Linda Durham, who helped establish contemporary art in Santa Fe. For more than 30 years, she owned and operated Durham Contemporary Art Gallery. Durham selected 40 paintings by 29 artists for the premier exhibition of what will become an annual national encaustic exhibition at the Institute.

Selected artists come from eleven states and are predominately women. Represented are Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington. Durham will award Best of Show and Award of Excellence cash prizes for the exhibition.

New Mexico artists represented in the exhibition include Albuquerque residents Molly Geissman, Kate Palmo, Harriette Tsosie and Frederick Yost; Farmington resident Michael Billie; Santa Fe residents Guy Baldovi, Linda Fillhardt, Barbara Gagel, Sherry Ikeda, Teena Robinson, and Cherry Whitener Rohe; and Taos resident Paula Verona.

The Institute is located at 18 County Road 55 A (General Goodwin Road), Cerrillos, NM. Take the historic Turquoise Trail--Highway 14--south from Santa Fe or north from Albuquerque. Look for the signs and flag.

EAI's one and only fund-raiser Gala "Thumos" is fast approaching and we would like to see all of you stir up the excitement with your friends, family and patrons by purchasing ticket. Appropriating science, technology and nature, artist Russell Thurston describes his creative process as "a journey without a map, never quite knowing where the work will wind up. My work is often a mirror of the world I'm trying to make sense of. At other times, it reflects a place to where I long to escape."

"Earthly Delights" represents a contemporary interpretation of one of the world's oldest artistic media, encaustic, which is pigmented beeswax. "It's a difficult medium to control" he says. "Accidents can happen, and often do, when applying the paint. I welcome these events; they help shape the work and give it a more spontaneous feel."

Thurston builds layer upon layer by fusing, scraping and embedding objects in the surface in a kind of archaeology that can reveal the history of its creation. Many of the paintings in "Earthly Delights" feature imagery of interconnected systems, often mingling the technological and the natural. In the painting "Nerve Net," for instance, dense colored lines weave in and out of what could be cells, DNA strands, or perhaps plant matter. "This painting began from a dream I had in which an anatomical engraving of a brain was going to be the main focus. Halfway through the painting, it went in a different direction and became more about the interconnectedness of natural systems. If I hadn't become an artist, I think I would have been a scientist. I see a similarity between scientific exploration and creating a work of art."

Many contemporary artists use paper wrapped over birch panels or paper as a collage element in their work. This three-day workshop goes one step further by providing participants experience with making their own paper and using the paper as a support for their work. Students will explore the ways in which paper can be wrapped, glued, stretched, pulp painted and made into sculpture. Then, using wax glazes, oil sticks and a variety of mixed media techniques, students will transform these amazing supports into works of art.

EAI member Martha Rea Baker was born in Texas and grew up in Mississippi. After college she returned to the Dallas area where she co-owned a gallery for two decades. In 2006, when she moved to Santa Fe, Baker embarked on encaustics. “It was a natural evolution,” she recalls of her 35 years working in watercolors, oils, and acrylic collage, all of which she manipulated by using layers and glazes. “The advantage of encaustic is the seductive glow of color I achieve through the layering process,” she says. Baker also works in cold-wax, mixing pliable wax medium with oil pigments. Inspired by the Southwest, Baker says that the content of her recent work is earth and land based. “I’m inspired by the strata of geology exposed in canyon walls and distant vistas such as those found in Galisteo Basin.” Ultimately, however, the underlying theme of her work is time. “Its passage and its effect on nature,” she says. “I seek a time-worn look—the results of erosion, weather, and the marks of previous civilizations.”

“Artists on Art” series probes why artists create

Even before written history, human beings manifested an undeniable urge to make marks on all kinds of surfaces. Witness the cave art from Lascaux, Altamira and that more recently captured by Werner Herzog in his fascinating documentary, “Cave of Forgotten Dreams.” The more than 30,000-year-old drawings in Chauvet Cave, Ardeche, France, not only predate written history, but also perspective. Yet their makers have eloquently captured motion and form and evidence a real understanding of anatomy. As we view them in 3-D, they come alive--as alive as if they were drawn yesterday. And we respond. Why? Why were they made? And why do humans continue their endless mark making even now?

“Why do Artists Make Art?” probes the reasons for our frenetic desire to make marks and create art. It is the first in a series of three “Artists on Art” talks by contemporary “mark makers,” whose works are part of three “Mining the Unconscious” exhibitions unfolding in Santa Fe and Cerrillos. The exhibitions and talks, offered free of charge to the public, are among more than 20 other community programs that compose the Mining the Unconscious project. She has challenged her panelists not to give the obvious “Because I have to” answer, but to dig deeper by asking themselves what happens when they don’t make art? was art valued and practiced in their families? why did they choose their particular form of expression and their materials? do they consider their work a spiritual practice? and many other challenging thoughts that evoke a deeper response. Panelists include Santa Fe artists Lisa de St. Croix, Taylor Oliver and Eliza Schmid, as well as Albuquerque artists Raymond Petersen and Barbara Shapiro.

The second “Artists on Art” program explores “How does art affect/reflect culture?” It’s slated for Friday, July 22 and panel moderator is Kathleen McCloud. McCloud is a visual artist and writer/audio producer for museum exhibitions, including the Vancouver Art Gallery, Dayton Art Institute and Herbert Johnson Museum/Cornell University as well as for multiple programs for the Library of Congress. Her panelists include Farmington artist Michael Billie, Santa Fe artists Sallyann Paschall and Iris Vazquez and Jemez Springs artist Betsie Miller-Kusz. The panelists have been asked to address how ritual fits into their work, whether landscape holds symbols and information unique to an area, impacting the culture of that place, and whether their art addresses contemporary culture or speaks more to myth.
“What is the role of the unconscious in creativity?” is the concluding program in the “Artists on Art “series. Its panel is moderated by Anne Farrell, Retired Chair of Media Arts for the Santa Fe Community College. Farrell’s panelists include Albuquerque artist Ralph Greene and Santa Fe artists Joe Griffo, John Hogan, Caroline Williams and Stan Yeatts. Panelists will bring the Mining the Unconscious discussions full circle as they address the role of the unconscious in their own work.

The mysteries of the creative process unfold in a series of exhibitions and community events this summer in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Called “Mining the Unconscious,” the project references the long- awaited 2009 publication of Carl Jung’s red book journal and explores the role of the unconscious in all forms of artistic expression, ranging from poetry, dance, drama, and painting to its reflection in myth, dream and shamanism.

The Red Book itself--sometimes referred to as “the holy grail of the unconscious”-- details Jung’s confrontation with his own unconscious in dialogs with archetypal figures he encounters through “active imagining.” Jung considered The Red Book--written and illustrated over a period of many years--his most important work. “The years...when I pursued the inner images, were the most important time of my life...Everything else is to be derived from this...My entire life consisted in elaborating what had burst forth from the unconscious and flooded me like an enigmatic stream.”

In a series of three exhibitions, contemporary artists explore such Jungian themes as alchemy, archetype, dream, prophecy, spirituality, shamanism and symbol.

“Mining the Unconscious I” which premiered at The Santa Fe Arts Commission Community Gallery Friday, June 17, continues through August 21st. “Mining the Unconscious II,” --an artist-initiated exhibition showcasing the works of 35 invited artists from throughout New Mexico opened Friday, July 8th and continues through August 7th at the Santa Fe
University of Art and Design’s Fine Arts Gallery. The Gallery is located next to the Fogelson Library on the University’s campus at 1600 Saint Michael's Drive, Santa Fe. The theory and practice of the fusion of photographic processes with the encaustic medium is the focus of this workshop. Participants will learn how to integrate photographic images with encaustic through techniques such as layering, pouring, painting, and by making original imagery translucent. Students will experiment with various methods of manipulating the original photograph, including toning, distressing, and transfer techniques. Also covered are archival techniques, presentation methods, and basic safety.

Known for his conceptual old master oils, Benítez discovered the ancient method of working figuratively with encaustic, exemplified by the well-known Fayum portraits of ancient Egypt. Working with this painstaking process, Benitez forges compelling portraits and figures out of molten wax, often with vignettes and poetic texts embedded into the luscious surface. Although he is preoccupied with examining and recuperating the ancient Greek and Egyptian past through an art historical technique, his subject matter is totally contemporary and examines the individual psyche confronted with the angst of our technologically driven, progress-oriented society. The title, Ut Pictura Poesis, a term coined by Roman author Horace, implies that the artistic image is interlaced with the threads of ethereal texts which poignantly construct a complex tableau representing perceptions of the world in which we live.

Benítez has featured his encaustics at the Chapelle des Penitents Blancs in Gordes, France, and the Abbaye de Fontmorigny (France) in 2008 and 2010. In addition to his painting, he lectures on the two-dimensional works of the baroque period, plus he has begun teaching workshops on the encaustic technique in the US and Europe, most notably at R & F paints in Kingston, New York, and the Encaustic Art Institute in Cerrillos, New Mexico. Benitez' work is also included in numerous private collections, come as high profile as Jean-Paul Gaultier's. These collections are spread across the globe, including the United States, France, Italy, Mexico, Canada and Sweden. His work is on permanent display at the New Mexico State Legislature's public art collection, as well as at the National Hispanic Culture Center and Conseil General de l'Aveyron in France.

Linda Fillhardt is thrilled to have one of her encaustic pieces purchased through the New Mexico Art in Public Places program. The piece, Disintegration #3, is now hanging in Santa Fe Fire Station #3.

Over 600 artists submit work each year to the New Mexico Art in Public Spaces program. From that group about 200 are selected and 3 pieces from each artist are placed in a portfolio for that year. When a public entity needs art for their space they select it from the portfolio.

The Santa Fe Fire Department chose this piece from the portfolio for their new fire station. They thought that the piece reminded them of fire and appreciated that fire was used in the encaustic process.

From Michael David:
Encaustic and photography (and film as well) are inherently and intimately
related. These mediums have the unique ability to "fuse" memory and encase the
"moment." Encaustic provides the perfect skin, flesh, and material to capture
and preserve photographic and film imagery imagery of our past and present.

I have been working with the two mediums for over two decades. From my early
figurative “Jackie Series,” to my most recent exhibition of collaborative
paintings, “Post Mammalian Tension (based on archival film and photography),
with filmmaker Scott Browning, I have developed techniques and processes unique
to the medium. The process of large and medium scale pouring is ambitious and
exciting and can yield extraordinary results.

on “The Jackies” and “Post Mammalian Tension” albums for examples of this
distinct and beautifully expressive process.

My collaborator Scott Browning will also be joining me at the workshop. Together
we will discuss the conceptual and technical issues we faced in bringing
together encaustic painting and archival cinema and photography for our recent
show in Atlanta (along with the surprising parallels and points of intersection
we discovered along the way). We will also explore the historical and
contemporary dialogue between painting and cinema – a sometimes contentious,
often complimentary, and always fascinating and evolving relationship (our
power point presentation on this covers everything from Leger, to Man Ray, to
Bergman, to Woody Woodpecker!).

We will only have a short time together and the time will no doubt fly –
therefore,I would like to start a dialogue with each of you now. If you could
send me JPEGs of your work and tell me your goals well in advance it will allow
us tailor this workshop to your individual needs and prepare relevant images and
support materials.

While our time is short, I know if we prepare well enough in advance you will
leave with several exhibition ready pieces you will love.

PS...don't forget to ask me about photo encaustic and silk, something we just
came up with about a month ago. It's amazing.

Some characteristics of encaustic medium lend themselves well to receiving
transferred images. These techniques enhance the ability of the artist to
represent ideas using layering, perspective, and graphics. Sherrie Posternak
uses transferred images extensively in her work, and has experimented with a
large variety of materials and methods. In this two day workshop April 30
and May 1, you will have a chance to play with and rate your photo transfers
using at least 8 different types of printed surfaces, 3 methods of
transferring, and 7 ways of "sealing in" your transfer. We will also spend
time learning how to correctly do a pour, and an alternative non-poured
panel preparation.
Sherrie will also demonstrate transferring other media besides photos, as
well as embedding (rather than transferring) images printed on silk, silk
tissue, and sumi paper. You will have time to test each technique on sample
boards, as well as spend time composing at least one finished piece. To sign

This three-day class is for artists who have a basic understanding of encaustic technique and want to push their painting into brave new areas. You will learn a variety of new techniques that allow you to take the encaustic process well beyond basic layering and scraping. You’ll be amazed at how versatile and evocative the medium can be.
A brief overview of what we’ll cover:
• “Work That Surface” — This portion of the workshop will show you how to use specialized encaustic tools designed to make unique marks, smooth the surface or build up heavy texture
• “The Three ‘E’s’” — Etching, Engraving, and Embossing. You’ll learn various ways to achieve fine details using stencils that can give a hard edge or a soft, glowing atmosphere to your paintings
• “Oil Magic” — How to integrate oils, oil sticks and dry pigments into the working process. The range of looks that you can achieve by adding oils is phenomenal. It really is magical and can greatly expand the possibilities of your painting
• “It Came in 3-D!” — After you’ve mastered the two-dimensional encaustic surface, it’s time to move on to the many possibilities of three-dimensional encaustic work. Encaustic can make a fine sculptural medium, but only if you know its strengths and weaknesses. An overview of how to work with encaustic in three-dimensions.

Russell Thurston lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with his wife, a writer, and his son, Max. Previously a photographer and illustrator in Chicago, IL, he has lived and painted in Santa Fe since 1996. Thank you for your enthusiastic response to the launching of the first Encaustic Arts Magazine!
During the initial subscription period, The Institute realized the hard version of the Encaustic Magazine was born ahead of its time. We quickly understood that to pay service to the quality of the Magazine and do it right, we would need a stronger foundation to spring from. Thus we have decided to publish it in the online format. This would make it available to everyone for free.

Working Representationally in Encaustic

The Encaustic Art Institute is offering a three-day workshop on working representationally with encaustic. Instructor is acclaimed encaustic master, Francisco Benitez. Benitez studied academic painting techniques and anatomy/figure drawing at the Art Student's League in New York City. He holds a BFA degree from the Department of Art and Art History at the Uniersity of New Mexico and completed independent graduate study in Spain and elsewhere. He exhibits internationally and is reprsented in Santa Fe by Nuart Gallery.

"Touched with Fire" offers an introduction to Encaustic.

As part of Albuquerque's Women and Creativity Month (March), is offering two "Touched with Fire" demonstrations of the encaustic (pigmented wax) painting technique by Institute member Harriette Tsosie.

The sessions are Saturday, March 5th from 1:00 - 3:00 PM and from 3:00 - 5:00 PM.   Admission (pay at the door) of $10 will be used to support the Institute's public education programs.

San Diego artist Josie Rodriguez was accepted for the Cannon Art Gallery 2011 Juried Biennial in Carlsbad CA. Her encaustic piece, Salt Flats II (right) was selected and is one in a series using sumi ink, salt and wax. The show runs January 30-March 18, 2011.

February Workshops at the Institute

The Encaustic Art Institute is offering two workshops in February for beginning artists as well as artists working in other media but longing to learn about encaustic.

"Touched with Fire," a two-day beginning encaustic workshop is being offered Saturday, February 12 - Sunday February 13. Instructor is Harriette Tsosie, founder of New Mexico Wax and current president of the Encaustic Art Institute. Tsosie holds a BA from Kalamazoo College, with a major in English Literature and a minor in Art. She was awarded a Light Scholarship for study in France after her sophomore year of college and upon graduation studied advanced painting with Jules Kirschenbaum at Drake University for several years.

Tsosie has been working with encaustic for eight years, studying beginning encaustic with Ellen Koment, intermediate with R and F Paints, and advanced with Paula Roland. In her workshop, students will learn how to work safely with encaustic, basic layering and scraping techniques, how to use the torch and the heat gun, and simple transfer and embedding techniques. Students will take home two or three completed paintings.Pictured is "Whisper," a work from Tsosie's current series, " Oriental Essence." It is 24" x 24", encaustic on panel.

"Encaustic and Wax Resist," is slated for Saturday, February 26 and Sunday, February 27. Instructor Kim Bernard, a founding member of New England Wax, holds a BFA degree from Parsons School of design and an MFA from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She has studied in France and Japan and currently teaches at the Maine College of Art. She came to encaustic painting as a sculptor, attracted by the viscous quality of the wax and the ability to work with it in many ways with various tools. A lifelong dancer, in her current body of work Bernard attempts to capture movement. In her workshop, students will learn Bernard's trade secrets for incorporating wax markings, gestural strokes, stamping, folding, batik and resist dyeing--a blend of traditional wax resist methods with contemporary encaustic techniques.

A New Book: Ellen Koment & Jack Leissring in Art & Letters Love & Desires

This book started back in 1995, in the early days of email. The exchanges continued for about five years, like a long conversation between friends, but without interruptions.  Each could complete a thought; there are none of the loose ends that normally occur face-to-face. A different kind of body language emerges from the the context. Those email letters are gathered here; they form a long conversation about art, love, sex, the differences and similarities of gender understanding. Ellen Koment, as  the book tells us, is the artist every art collector dreams of, one whose hidden message speaks the ineffable; for is not the ultimate purpose of art to say in imagery what cannot be said in words?  Jack Leissring is the collector that every artists dreams of, there at every turn of the path, over many years. Together, then, through the bond of artistic image, we have become a balanced whole. I believe this book shows this; it is almost a novel in letter-form--510 pages.

The show features the encaustic art of Michael Billie and stone sculptures of Eddy Shorty.  Billie’s encaustic paintings entail working with bees wax mixed with damar resin and pigment. He often utilizes colored wax that he has made, as well as a variety of photography images, pigments and other materials that he’s collected from his travels around the world.
Shorty begins his projects by sketching a stone from different angles. In time, he sees a form in the stone, and then works to create the images – often animals or spirit beings from Navajo mythology.

An opening reception will be held Friday, January 7, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Second Annual Gala and Auction Succeeds

Many thanks to the more than 30 artists who donated work to the Encaustic Art Institute's Second Annual Gala and Auction. The two part auction proved popular with attendees, who purchased seven works in the prix fixe ($250) portion and bid on and purchased six works in the silent auction. Gross income including art sales, tickets and several donations was approximately $5,200 about double last year's event. Attendees enjoyed jazz by the Body and Soul Trio and food prepared by founders Douglas and Adrienne Mehrens. The weather cooperated, providing a warm, starry evening so everyone present could view and bid on the art, relax on the patio and listen to the music. Thanks to one and all for your participation. Artists working with encaustic (pigmented wax) explore the medium’s versatility in “New Dimensions,” opening with a reception from 1:00 - 6:00 PM Saturday, August 21 at the Encaustic Art Institute (Institute), Cerrillos, New Mexico. “We wanted the artists to break the 2-D boundary and explore their ideas
in three-dimensional form,” says Douglas Mehrens, Institute founder and
himself an encaustic artist. “And that’s what they did. They let go of
preconceived ideas, took risks, worked spontaneously, sculpted, painted,
used clay, concrete, plaster, fibers, found objects and more creating
works for this show.” Exhibiting artists are from 12 states and three
foreign countries.
The Institute is a nonprofit organization dedicated to teaching, promoting
and exhibiting encaustic work. It’s located just 18 miles south of Santa Fe
at 18 County Road 55A (General Goodwin Road), Cerrillos, Operating
hours are Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 - 6:00 PM and by
appointment.

"WAX/PAPER” Opens at EAI

Santa Fe artists are part of a new exhibition featuring encaustic (pigmented wax) and
paper works at the Encaustic Art Institute, Cerrillos. “Wax/Paper” opens with a
reception from 1:00 - 6:00 Saturday, July 24th in the Pyramid Gallery on the Institute’s campus just north of the historic village of Cerrillos. From Santa Fe, take Highway 14-the scenic Turquoise Trail--south about 18 miles. Just before the historic town of Cerrillos turn left onto County Road 55 A (General Goodwin Road). The Institute’s driveway is the first right.

“Wax/Paper” showcases just one more way artists can use the ancient encaustic
medium for contemporary work. “I started as a representational artist working with acrylic,” says Institute President Harriette Tsosie. “Then I discovered encaustic. My work has become increasing abstract as I learn what this ancient medium can do for contemporary artists.” Tsosie notes the medium was developed by the Egyptians and perfected by the Greeks and Romans as they occupied ancient Greece. “It was essentially used for painting mummy portraits,” Tsosie said. “Now artists can paint with it, sculpt it, carve it, pour it, put it on paper, and use it for 3-D work. It’s amazing.”

Santa Fe area artists included in “Wax/Paper” are: Paige Baillie, Martha Baker, Guy Baldovi, Dennis Branch, Fionna Buck, Yvonne Burk, Jackie Butler, Louise Casselman, Andrea Cermanski, Linda Fillhardt, Nicholas Gadbois, Barbara Gagel, Joan Heiden, Stephanie Huerta, Douglas Mehrens, Kate Palmo, Sallyann Paschall, Teena Robinson, Paula Roland, Joyce Roetter, Cherry Whitener Rohe, Susan Shaffer, Richard Schleifer, Douglas Smith, Russell Thurston and Carol Ware.

The Institute incorporated as a non proift several years ago and now has more than 70 members from across North America. It offers workshops and public education programs for all levels of students, promotes and exhibits encaustic work, and is estabishing a permanent collection and library. Artists Stand Out in Santa Fe

A few works stand out at the new exhibition at the Santa Fe Community Gallery. Pollination: Encaustic Works From New Mexico showcases the work of 23 artists who work in encaustic and the work is a mix of styles from traditional encaustic painting to encaustic printmaking and wax sculptures. Within this exhibition there are some exceptional pieces.

A large wall piece with back lighting commands a good section of one of the outer walls as you first enter the gallery. Disappear by Paula Roland is an encaustic monotype measuring about eight feet by six feet with three layers of waxed monotypes. Eight fluorescent bulbs installed behind the work add another layer – this one of light - that peeks through the swiss cheese-like openings in the various layers. Roland is one of the more well known encaustic artists who has participated in the Santa Fe Monothon which began in 1987.

A small piece that was tucked inside an alcove deserves a closer look. first sign by Helen Cozza is an abstract work that references architectural elements through dimensional printmaking. The work consists of lithographic prints and air-dried polymer clay that are juxtaposed to provide a look at the constructed environment. The several layers of print, clay, and board create a bas relief format. Although, small in size compared to some of the works it definitely commands the wall space it occupies.

Two other works are of note including A Lingering Whisper by Stephanie Lerma and Intersection by Susan Zimmerman (see image above). Lerma’s work challenges the viewer with her composition of wax-covered petals made from handmade paper that provide the allusion of swirling movement originating from the center. The colors of red and pink petals make a connection to flowers and pollination. Zimmerman’s beautifully crafted encaustic layered painting with subtle neutral colors and simple line drawings that have been etched into the wax speaks of calm and serenity.

The opening was held on Friday evening, June 25 with over 100 people in attendance. According to Rod Lambert, the Gallery Director, there are usually over 300 people at the openings but the quick thunderstorm that blanketed Santa Fe that evening kept some people away. Those brave souls who ventured out appeared to be staunch supporters of this gallery and of the local artists. The gallery represents only New Mexico artists and is a great space for the community. The space has plenty of natural light from a wall of windows at the entrance to the gallery.

This exhibition was publicized in a few of Santa Fe’s newspapers as an exhibit about the environmental impact on bee populations but the connection to bees stops at the title. The only connection the works in this exhibition have with bees is that they are made with pigmented beeswax. It’s a shame the publications didn’t address the wide range of encaustic works in the show. This exhibition includes significant work that explores the ways encaustic is used today and has been used historically.

I have to hand it to the gallery director for jurying and hanging this exciting exhibition. Each artist received ample space and it was well worth the trip from Albuquerque.

The Santa Fe Community Gallery is located at 201 West Marcy in Santa Fe. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 5pm.
